He has more than 28 years of operations and leadership experience. He began his GE career in GE Capital Aviation Services in Ireland. Since then, his leadership, operations and business skills have led to successively larger leadership roles in GE Capital, GE Aviation and GE Power. He holds an honors degree in law from Trinity College.

Hydropower can significantly contribute toward solving the energy storage challenge in Europe by offering the flexibility needed to “firm” intermittent renewables (wind and solar). Today, pumped storage represents 95% of energy storage capacities worldwide. As opposed to thermal power stations, pumped storage power plants are able to react in the shortest possible time to network fluctuations, by generating the required electricity or by absorbing any excess.

This session explores the opportunities and impediments for hydro’s contribution in getting energy storage “right.” Edouard de Frescheville (hydro marketing director, GE Renewable Energy) will moderate this session.
